Tonight we’ll be making a big concert announcement at the KZOK booth in the exhibition center for the show’s pre-party. Yes, yet another major KZOK artist is coming to the Seattle area.

Don’t worry, though, we didn’t leave out those who can’t make it tonight. If you tune into KZOK at 11 pm, we’ll spill the beans over the airwaves.

JUST IN: Keyboardist Ray Manzarek, a founding member of The Doors, has died at 74, his business manager confirms to @cbsnews

According to the Doors’ Facebook post, at the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manzarek.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,” said Krieger in the post. “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.” Krieger and Manzarek performed together under a variety of names over the past few years.

Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manczarek, son Pablo Manzarek, Pablo’s wife Sharmin and their three children Noah, Apollo and Camille. Funeral arrangements are pending. The post says “The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please make a memoriam donation in Ray Manzarek’s name at www.standup2cancer.org.”

Jeffrey Nugent wrote a May 17 op-ed about firearms for The Washington Post, where he stresses the need for stronger background checks, a sore spot for the NRA.

He wrote, “I agree with Ted that our constitutional right to bear arms should not be undermined. I want all those who are qualified to purchase a gun to be able to do so. But — and here is where I part ways with my brother — not everyone is qualified to own a gun, so expanded background checks should be a legislative priority.”

The rocker’s brother points out that today, anyone (even a convicted felon) can purchase guns at gun shows or through private sellers without a background check. He asks, “Why would responsible gun owners want to protect people who threaten not only our safety but our gun rights?”

He goes on to say: “The NRA has it wrong: Irresponsible gun owners are bad for everyone. If you shouldn’t have access to a gun, then there should be no way for you to access a gun!”

Ted responded two days later with a post at Newsmax, titled “My Dear Misinformed Brother.”

The crux of his argument is: “Passing expanded background checks would do nothing to curtail or suppress thugs or psychos from accessing weapons and committing mass murder, carjacking, the nightly shootouts in Chicago or a gangsta shooting at the Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans. Paroled thugs or bug-eyed psychotics could not care less about any gun laws.The bold and ugly reality is that they will always gain access to a weapon.”

Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey of The Who had waited quite long enough for John Entwhistle and Keith Moon to show up for their gig at the RickyTick Club in suburban London tonight in 1966, and started playing with the drummer and bass player of a local band who opened the show. When John and Keith finally did show up in the middle of their set, a fight broke out that ended with Pete beaning Keith in the head with his guitar. Moon and Entwhistle were so angry the quit the band, but they’d both rejoined within a week.

Bob Dylan and The Band were playing Edinburgh, Scotland tonight in 1966, and a fair number of their fans were still folkie purists, incensed that Dylan had gone electric, and at this show thought it might be fun to try and overpower The Band by playing their own harmonicas.

The Beatles brand new Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album got a special preview on BBC Radio tonight in 1967, with disc jockey Kenny Everett, who played the entire album with the notable exception of the song A Day In The Life, which had been banned by the BBC as they feared it could promote drug-taking.

Chicago’s mild-mannered bass player Peter Cetera was in Los Angeles today in 1969, and decided to take in a Dodger game. He ran into four gung-ho U.S. Marines who took exception to the length of his hair and beat the crap out of him, breaking his jaw and sending him to the hospital for two days.

T-Rex were on the British charts with their fourth and final #1 hit, Metal Guru, today in 1972. Frontman Marc Bolan would die in a car crash 5 years later.

The Buddy Holly Story, a bio-pic starring actor Gary Busey in his finest role as Holly, premiered in Buddy’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas tonight in 1978. Busey was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and the soundtrack won the academy award.

The Eagles singing drummer Don Henley married Texas-born model Sharon Summerall today in 1995. It was a big party with a who’s who rock and roll guest list including all of The Eagles, Randy Newman (who Henley just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame),  and performances from Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Sting, Tony Bennett, and Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, and John Fogerty (who played with Newman at his induction). They’re still married and have 3 kids.

Black Sabbath’s drummer Bill Ward was rehearsing for the band’s reunion tour  in London today in 1998 when he suffered a heart attack and was rushed to a hospital. He recovered and played that tour to the delight of original Sabbath fans, but was booted from their current reunion tour by Ozzy’s manager-wife Sharon Osbourne when he demanded a full 4th of the money.

Rock and Roll Birthdays

Singer Joe Cocker is 69. He was quite popular in England but relatively unknown in the U.S. until the movie of his performance at Woodstock came out.

Singer Cherilyn Sarkisian, better known by her stage name Cher, is 67.

T-Rex bass player Steve Currie would be 66. He died in a car crash at age 33, just 4 years after the band’s frontman Marc Bolan was killed the same way.

Black Oak Arkansas guitarist Jimmy Henderson is 59.

Guitarist Jane Wiedlin of one of the most successful all-female rock bands of all time, The Go Go’s is 55.

Host Charlie Rose asked, “Can you imagine a revival of Creedence?” Fogerty responded that, on occasion, he’ll say something in the press referencing a reunion, and he’d immediately get negative feedback from his surviving former bandmates, bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford (the other member was Fogerty’s late brother, guitarist Tom Fogerty, who passed away in 1990).

Still, Fogerty said, “I think it’s a possibility in the future. It’s not something I’m actively seeking. But I’m not totally against the idea either. It just seems like I always hear that’s not going to happen.”

Fogerty is revisiting his past on his upcoming album, Wrote A Song For Everyone (out May 28), which sees him collaborating with a wide array of artists, including Foo Fighters, Jennifer Hudson and Alan Jackson, re-recording songs from his solo and CCR catalog. And Fogerty recently told Radio.com that he’s planning on doing full CCR album performances on his upcoming tour.

After opening with The Beatles’ “Eight Days A Week” (one of the songs being performed live for the first time on the Out There tour), McCartney told the audience, “I’m getting that old feeling like we’re gonna have a good party here tonight!” And he was right. The sold-out crowd was there to party, sing along, and be taken on a magical musical tour of the past 50 years.

McCartney’s seemingly simple stage set up evolved into a masterful display of video screens, specialty lighting, and during a bravura performance of “Live and Let Die” toward the end of the evening, arena warming pyrotechnics.

The present and past were both given equal attention by McCartney. In a set which found Paul putting down the guitar in favor of the piano, he performed both “My Valentine,” released last year and written for current wife Nancy, along with “Maybe I’m Amazed,” which was written for his deceased wife Linda after helping him get through the break-up of The Beatles.

His deceased Beatles bandmates found fitting tributes in the show as well. While raised approximately 20 feet above the stage on a lighted platform, McCartney launched into “Here Today,” the song he wrote for John Lennon after Lennon’s assassination, letting the song’s lyrics offer a heartfelt tribute.

“George was a great ukelele player,” McCartney later said as he pulled out a ukelele to begin George Harrison’s classic “Something,” accompanied by a photographic tribute to Harrison on the video monitors. “Let’s hear it for George!” He also shared an anecdote regarding Frank Sinatra, who had been said to have proclaimed that “Something” was his favorite Lennon/McCartney tune. Of course it was written by Harrison.

While fewer people seem to carry lighters these days, those who had them made sure to pull them out for both “Let It Be” and “Hey Jude,” the latter of which also had concertgoers finding themselves broadcast on the video monitors when caught by the roving Jude cam.

Although they go pretty much unsung throughout the show, McCartney’s band, consisting of Rusty Anderson, Brian Ray, Abe Laboriel Jr., and Paul Wickens, are truly incredible.

It’s a rare opportunity to be able to see this much modern musical history packed into three hours of stage time by a consumate musician who is still at the top of his game. This is one concert of the year not to be missed.

“Out There” Tour Opening Night Set List

What do the prog-rock giants and the hip-hop legend have in common (other than membership in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame)? Well, probably not much. But, believe it or not, both bands have toured with San Francisco rockers Primus.

Primus was the opening act on the genre-crashing Anthrax/Public Enemy co-headlining tour of 1991. The following year, they played arenas opening for Rush. So Primus frontman Les Claypool is one of the only musicians to spend time on the road with both groups, and he says that both are fully deserving of the accolades that they received at the induction ceremony in Los Angeles last month.

The members of Primus have always worn their Rush influences on their sleeves; like the Canadian group, they are a power trio led by a bassist with an unusual singing voice who are influenced by hard rock and progressive music.

Claypool told Radio.com, “One of my first introductions to music as a teenager was Rush records.”And it showed, particularly early on in their career. Primus’ debut EP, 1989′s Suck On This, opens with 36 seconds of the band covering Rush’s classic instrumental “YYZ” before launching into their own “John The Fisherman.”

And while it is often said that you shouldn’t meet your idols, he reports that bonding with Rush has been a great experience for him and his band. “When I was 16, if you told me I’d be friends with Geddy, Alex and Neil, I would have s*** myself right there, literally,” he said. “To work with these guys and be friends with them, and to still be friends with them after all these years, it’s a pretty spectacular thing.”

He’s also glad to see that the band’s stock seems to have risen (in terms of credibility) in the past few years, which culminated with their long-awaited Rock Hall induction. But he notes that Primus were supporters when it wasn’t so cool to love Rush.

“Back when we were playing with them, we actually got a lot of flak from press, as to why we were playing with these guys, these progressive rock dinosaurs… this was in the ‘90s,” Claypool said. “But the fans thought it was the greatest thing! It makes me chuckle now, to see these bands that have come out in support of Rush after all these years, when they were remaining very quiet in the ‘90s when we were getting chastised for supporting them (laughs).”

The Stooges – “1969″ The Stooges debuted in ’69 with their classic self-titled LP, which featured this skull-crusher. “Another year for me and you, another year with nothing to do!” Well, there was nothing to do after June 3 of that year, at least if you were a Trekkie (a term which hadn’t yet been coined): That was the date that the show was cancelled. Years later, in 1997, Stooges frontman Iggy Pop appeared on the third Trek series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as Yelgrun, an “overseer” for the Dominion (those were the bad guys, for non-DS9 fans). (See a couple of Iggy’s scenes here.)

The Mamas & The Papas – “Monday Monday” Though Star Trek aired on Thursday nights at that time that “Monday Monday” hit No. 1 in 1966, there’s a line here that rings true: “Can’t trust that day!” Or at least NBC couldn’t, moving the show to the dead zone of Friday nights instead of just cancelling it. The cancellation moment came two season later, with the show returning nearly 20 years later in 1987 via Star Trek: The Next Generation. And you know who was there? Mamas & Papas singer Michelle Phillips, who played Jenice Manheim (Captain Picard’s ex-girlfriend) in the first season of the show. Boom. Circle complete.

Fleetwood Mac – “The Chain” Like Star Trek, Fleetwood Mac has proved remarkably enduring. Although the lineup (like Trek‘s Enterprise) has gone through many staff changes, like the Federation, drummer Mick Fleetwood (along with bassist John McVie) has remained a constant. While you can’t miss Fleetwood’s commanding presence behind the drums at the Mac’s concerts, you’d be forgiven for missing his appearance on the Next Generation season 2 episode “Manhunt” in 1989.  First off, he shaved off his omnipresent beard for the role. Second, his prosthetics rendered him unrecognizable. In this scene, he plays an Antedean dignitary who looks like a fish. Is that politically incorrect? Well, we got the idea from Lwaxana Troi, who exclaimed, “Delegates! Last time I saw something like that, it was being served on a plate!”

Rage Against The Machine- “Bulls On Parade” “Weapons, not home, not food, not shoes,” spits frontman Zach de la Rocha; it’s one of many songs where Rage stand up for the less fortunate. To be sure, in Gene Rodenberry’s Trek universe, there are haves and have-nots, but it is still an optimistic future where poverty seems to be eliminated and racism is rarely an issue (though it did pop up in the original series episode “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield”). That’s a future that guitarist Tom Morello no doubt hopes for, so it’s no surprise that he was a big fan of the show, and appeared in the 1998 film Star Trek: Insurrection (featuring the Next Generation crew), uncredited as a (heavily made-up and unrecognizable) Son’A officer.

Audioslave – “Original Fire” “The original fire has died and gone, but the riot inside moves on!” That may be a bit strong, but it’s sort of fitting: the Enterprise’s “five year mission” ended after three seasons in 1969, but the passion of the fans led to a return of Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew in 1979′s Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Similarly, the disintegration of Rage Against The Machine didn’t stop Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford, who stuck together to form Audioslave. But why are we including two Morello/Wilk/Commerford songs in a row? Because Morello had the good fortune to appear in two Treks. After Insurrection, he returned in more recognizable form on the 2000 episode of Star Trek: Voyager, as a crewman named “Mitchell.” Watch his scene here.

Brad Paisley – “Celebrity” Paisley is a noted Trek fan, and while he has never appeared on one of the TV shows or films, he did get Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, to appear in this video. Paisley was also one of the many guests on Shatner’s 2011 album Seeking Major Tom (on a cover of the Steve Miller Band’s “Space Cowboy”).

The Beatles were at Abbey Road today in 1967, starting in on a new John Lennon number, You Know My Name (Look Up The Number), a comedy-music hall song in the style of their friends The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. They didn’t like it much, didn’t finish it until 1969, and it didn’t come out until after they’d broken up, as the B-side to Let It Be.

Long-playing (LP) records for the first time sold more than singles in England today in 1969. No at all coincidentally, the top album on the charts was the debut by Led Zeppelin, who’s manager Peter Grant refused to  let them release singles in England.

Elton John hit a record sales milestone today in 1975, when his Captain Fantasic and the Brown Dirt Cowboys was certified platinum (over 1 million copies sold) on the day it came out, the first album ever to do so. Here he is doing the title track live at the Seattle Center Coliseum circa 1975. Maybe you were there, I was.

An arsonist set fire to Tom Petty’s house in Encino California tonight in 1987. Lost to the flames were about $800,000 in guitars, house, and Tom’s then-signiature grey top hat, but the Encino Fire Department was able to save his beloved Gibson Dove acoustic, the basement recording studio, and best of all the tapes he had recorded there. Tom still owns the house, and it is now rebuilt with flame-proof materials.

Bill Wyman went into the restaurant business when Sticky Fingers opened in London today in 1989. He may have been pre-planning the diversification of his financial assets, as he would do the Steel Wheels and Urban Jungle tours with The Rolling Stones that year, then quit the band, though it wasn’t formally announced until 1992.

Nirvana played the last show of a North American van tour at a small club called The Zoo in Boise Idaho tonight in 1990. The next day they would drive back to Seattle and sack their drummer Chad Channing, later to replace him with Dave Grohl of the recently-split Washington D.C. band Scream. In the interim they would do one show at the now long gone Motorsports Garage on Stewart Street with Mudhoney’s Dan Peters on drums.

Paul McCartney and second wife Heather Mills announced today in 2006 that they’d given up on trying to save their 4 year marriage. Heather had apparently dreamed of a jet-setting lavish social life with a former Beatle, but later complained to freinds that he was “a boring old fart”, “the only thing he ever did was go down to the pub with his roadies, We never have parties or do fun things”,she hated living in the English countryside, and also complained that Paul “Smoked cannabis as regularly as others would have a cup of tea”. Their highly publicised divore in 2008 would cost millions in legal fees and leave Heather with a mere £24.3 million to get by on.

Rock and Roll Birthdays

Yes and King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford is 64.

Pearl Jam’s heyday drummer Dave Abbruzzese is 45, and back in Texas. He was never on board with their famous 1994 boycott of TicketMaster, and they sacked him citing “personality conflicts” in August of that year.
