Bernie Sanders Collaborates with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore

By Robyn Collins

Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders have collaborated on a new mash-up track called “Feel It in Your Guts.”

The song, which will be released by the indie label Joyful Noise Recordings, is a 12-string acoustic piece that features samples from Sanders speeches. Subjects the presidential hopeful mentions include capitalism, economic inequality, social justice, and human rights.

A thousand white flexi-disc vinyls of the track will be given to people who donate to the Sanders campaign. There is no minimum donation, however, the label said in a statement, “We reserve the right to cancel your order if we feel like you’re being an opportunistic d—. Dig deep. Feel it in your guts.”

Moore recommended a $27 contribution; the track is available to download for free.

Said Joyful Noise: “We, at the label were inspired to support the Sanders campaign, and we thought it would be best to use our curatorial talents to this end. Being a weird-o indie rock record label, we are fortunate to work with a variety of incredible musicians; including, on occasion, the great Thurston Moore. So we decided to ask him. And we were delighted that in a matter of minutes after posing the idea, Thurston excitedly agreed.”

For a “weird-o indie” label to secure the cooperation of a Mooore was one thing. The greater challenge was getting Sanders onboard. “Fortunately, one of our employees was already friends with the good folks of the Bernie campaign, so we reached out,” the label said. “Amazingly, the Bernie campaign responded, and within a week or so, we heard that Bernie himself was into the idea. The amazing folks at the Bernie campaign have worked closely with us to make this crazy collaboration a reality.”
