Is a Hole Reunion Coming?

By Hayden Wright

At the height of the ’90s alt-rock era, Hole broke through the reigning boys’ club with their babydoll dresses, honest lyrics and powerhouse songs. In the quarter-century since, frontwoman Courtney Love has earned more attention for her offstage antics than for being an icon of an era.

Hole’s last album Nobody’s Daughter was released six years ago and included few members (besides Love) who brought the band to prominence at its peak. Since its formation, Hole has featured a rotating cast of sixteen musicians—producing a kind of drift from where it all began.

Recent efforts haven’t included members from the band’s heyday: Melissa Auf Der Maur, Patty Schemel, and Eric Erlandson comprised Hole at its 90s’ best, and haven’t worked with Love since 1999, 1998 and 2002, respectively. However, Love posted an Instagram with Auf Der Maur and Shemel captioned “with the girls, serving up a Hole lot of something. maybe,” perhaps hinting at a reunion.

In the past, Auf Der Maur has expressed hesitancy to get the old Hole back together.

“When I imagine us playing outdoor daytime stages to, like, beer-soaked 20-year-olds who don’t even know Hole or listen to records, that doesn’t sound healing or celebratory,” she told BlastEcho last month.

Auf Der Maur seemed more interested in promoting Hole’s legacy through footage and storytelling than through live shows or new music in 2016.

“Courtney is a once-in-a-lifetime piece of art. She is f—in’ incredible. And, yes, her drama sometimes overshadows the power of the band. The power of the band, the arc of the albums, and her performing abilities, we have it all on tape everywhere. We have proof of it, and I would love to have it in one place. I support that story, and I would be happy to put it in an incredible archival package. But that doesn’t mean playing a thousand f—in’ festivals for money. If you wanna talk about the archives, and you wanna talk about the brilliant past, then I’ll have a conversation.”

Nevertheless, Love’s social media post is encouraging news that something—who knows what, exactly—might happen with Hole soon.
