Sarah’s Beer of the Week 03.24.16

Those of you who have read my beer blog before know that I love IPA.  I love me some hops.  I love me the bitterness.  It’s just my ‘cup of tea’ so to speak.  I often try new IPA’s that I see in the store.  While browsing the beer fridge at my local market I spotted Samuel Smith India Ale.  They make some fantastic beers.  I love the Nut Brown, the Organic Pale Ale, the Organic Lager, the Oatmeal Stout…but I’d never tried the India Ale.  Samuel Smith has been around since 1758.  That’s an OLD brewery!  They know beer!  I had such high expectations, and was so sad with the result.  Have I mentioned how much I love their other beers?!  This one is off the mark for me.  The primary flavor is not hops, but malt.  There is very little carbonation, and it’s earthy and bready.  These are not flavors I was expecting, nor are they my preferred flavors for this style of beer.  There is a bit of bitterness, but overall I’d say this is not a beer for a hophead, or for someone who likes a hoppy IPA.  Perhaps it’s a good starter beer for someone who needs a slow intro to hops.  I won’t abandon Sam, but I will not be purchasing this one again…
