Throughout sporting history, there have been some pretty bad renditions of the National Anthem, from ill-advised choices like Roseanne Barr, Scott Stapp, and Steven Tyler. And, if the idea of a Vince Neil signing “The Star Spangled Banner” before an arena football game kickoff sounds like the makings of some in-key, in-time, and emotionally affecting patriotism, well, you’ve come to the wrong place.
There was no Tommy Lee percussion to hide behind, no rumbling of Nikki Sixx‘s bass. Just Neil’s halting voice, with some grinning cheerleaders standing behind him, the singer holding a football in hand.
The occasion was the first game of the Las Vegas Outlaws arena league football team, which is coincidentally owned by Neil.
If we’re going to be honest here, the fact that Neil gets the lyrics mostly right is something of a miracle. Check out the video above around the 5:10 mark (via Vice) and keep an eye out for more struggle national anthems as the Outlaws continue their quest for arena league gold.
