Lyrics like “When you’re down and troubled, and you need some loving care” and “People can be so cold,” from Carole King‘s classic “You’ve Got a Friend” are great if you’ve looking for comfort after, say, a bad breakup, or a spat with a friend.
But do those lyrics provide comfort, or an appropriate apology after your country has just been victim to a terrorist attack and the most powerful country in the world neglects to send anyone of note to an ensuing unity rally?
John Kerry certainly thought so. He brought James Taylor with him to an event attended by several French officials, where the singer/songwriter performed his take on the King classic. Reaction on Twitter was not positive.
