Musicians, Radio Hosts React to Joe Cocker’s Passing

The music world was quick to react to the passing of legendary British singer Joe Cocker. Cocker, one of the great interpreters of the rock music era, was the rare artist who recorded definitive versions of songs by the Beatles that held up to the originals, including “With a Little Help From My Friends,” “She Came In Through the Bathroom Window” and “Something.” His catalog also included takes on songs by Bob Dylan (“Just Like a Woman,” “I Shall Be Released”), Traffic (“Feelin’ Alright”), and the Box Tops (“The Letter”), among many others. While he rarely wrote his own songs, he soulful vocal performances took each song he recorded well beyond simply being a “cover version.” Judging by the response his passing inspired, many of his peers in the music business, and those who played and reported on music, agree.
