Today is Kurt Cobain’s birthday. He would have been 47.

Though Cobain is no longer with us, it’s no reason to pout. The dude did more in five or so years than any band has ever done. Nirvana was arguably the first punk band that attracted a mainstream audience — as opposed to a punk band eventually conforming to a mainstream audience. (The Ramones came close, but weren’t really appreciated until after their demise.)

Nirvana was a bullet to the chest of hair metal and MTV’s rock star culture. Nirvana essentially made everyone look stupid on a global scale. Brett Michaels and Vince Neil were suddenly shoved to the side (thank god).

Simple, hard-hitting songs without an act.

Cobain, by no means, was the first dude in our region writing the type of music we’ve come to accept as “grunge.” But as mentioned before, he was the first to have that particular style of punk rock to resonate with Joe Six Pack.

Without further ado, here are (what think are) the five best Nirvana songs:

5) Curmudgeon

4) Blew

3) Radio Friendly Unit Shifter

2) Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle

1) Talk To Me
