The VD Edition: This Day In Classic Rock [Video]

Valentine’s Day in Liverpool England today in 1961 sported a special show at the appropriately named Casanova Club with The Beatles, who’s grand finale was Paul McCartney leading a cover of Elvis Presley’s Wooden Heart wearing a heart-shaped piece of wood pinned to his coat, covered in satin and embroidered with their names: John, Paul, George, and Pete. It was raffled off, and came with a kiss from Paul.

Mannfred Mann were at #1 in England and #10 in the U.S. today in 1968 with a cover of Bob Dylan’s The Mighty Quinn. Bob had recorded it the year before in the Basement Tapes sessions, but wouldn’t release it for another 3 years, so how did an English band get it?

The Who played a show at the refectory (cafeteria) of The University of Leeds in that northern English town tonight in 1970. Pete Townsend was “well-chuffed” to be playing his Gibson SG through his brand-new specially designed HiWatt CP 103 “Super Who” amplifier. They’d tried to record at Hull University two nights before for a possible live album, but somehow the track for John Entwhistle’s bass was blank, so they tried again tonight, resulting in The Who: Live at LeedsThe Greatest Live Rock and Roll Record Ever Made, and the placement of Leeds refectory on Britain’s National Register of Historic Places.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono started a week-long run as co-hosts of The Mike Douglas Show today in 1972.

The B-52’s played live for the first time tonight in 1977 in their native Athens Georgia at a Valentine’s Day party in a greenhouse. Within a couple of years John Lennon would hear their hit Rock Lobster on the radio and note that Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson were doing exactly what Yoko did.

The Sweet drummer Mick Tucker died of leukemia today in 2002 at 54.

The Knack’s songwriter, songwriter, and guitarist Doug Fieger died of cancer today in 2010 at 57.

Rock and Roll Valentine’s Day Weddings

Soft-rockers Daryl “The Captain” Dragon and Toni Tenille got very publicly married for Valentine’s Day today in 1974 in Virginia City Nevada on a whirlwind promotional tour. Love did not keep them together though, as they filed for divorce this last January.

Lou Reed married British designer Sylvia Morales in a ceremony in his Manhattan apartment today in 1980. They would last a little over 10 years together.

Elton John married German recording engineer Renata Blauel in Sydney Australia today in 1984. They divorced in 1987.

Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia married filmmaker Deborah Koons today in 1994 in Marin California. He died a year later.

The Animals lead guitarist Vic Briggs is 69.

Original Heart lead guitarist Roger Fisher is 64.
