The album was recorded over six shows held at Washington, D.C. venue the Cellar Door towards the end of 1970, less than a year after the dissolution of the band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The concerts were among Young’s first following the instant success of his third solo album, After the Gold Rush, which had been released earlier that same year.

According to Rolling Stone, the solo acoustic Cellar Door concerts were booked in preparation for two high-profile gigs later in the month at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall.
