Allen Lanier Loses Battle With C.O.P.D., Dies At Age 67

Allen Lanier, a founding member of the cult, guitar-heavy rock band Blue Öyster Cult, has died. at the age of 67.

The keyboardist and guitarist reportedly died from complications regarding his Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or C.O.P.D — a disease his longtime band mate Eric Bloom attributes to years of heavy smoking.

Lanier formed Blue Öyster Cult in 1967 with guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser, drummer Albert Bouchard, bassist Andrew Winters, and singer Les Braunstein. Braunstein left two years after the formation, and Lanier suggested Bloom take over lead vocal duties.

Lanier eventually left the band and retired from music in 2007. However, he returned to Blue Öyster Cult for the band’s 40th anniversary concert in New York last November.

Lanier is survived by his wife Dory, sister Mary Anne and mother Martha according to a post made on the band’s Facebook page,
