Georgia Brewery Pays Tribute To Seattle Band…Again.

Burnt Hickory Brewery, a small craft beer-maker from Kennesaw (outside Atlanta) Georgia, has gained a fair amount of national press by being true rock and roll dirtbags. Brewmasters by day, punk rock guitarists and record collectors by night, they named one of their first beers after Seattle’s beer-swilling, garage-rock kings Mudhoney two years ago. The limited run was a hit, winning them a regional home-brewing competition, so they’ve decided to do it again.

Super Fuzzy Big Muffey Honey Brown Ale, like all their beers, is a “high gravity” (meaning more alcohol) beer, and will be again produced in limited quantities. All we know so far is that one case reportedly made it to Seattle, deliverred to Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters. Interestingly the label features local artist (and designer of most of Mudhoney’s album covers) Ed Fotheringham‘s homage to the low-budget swill many of us in the Pacific Northwest will remember for the band’s Thorn single: Schmidt “Animal Beer”.

Now Mudhoney can say — and you can use this gratis at your neighborhood pub quiz — they have something in common with former President Jimmy Carter’s brother Billy. You do remember Billy Beer, don’t you? Don’t worry if you don’t, it was awful.

While all breweries have fermentation tanks and great big kettles for boiling the wort (which ain’t beer until it ferments), Burnt Hickory seems to think a stereo system with turntable is an equally important part of the brewing process. We like this place! They’ve gone and made YouTube videos about most of their beers, and Mudhoney is apparently not the only band they like:

They also like Alice In Chains

English punk band The Damned

Madison Wisconsin’s Killdozer

Raleigh North Carolina metal band Corrosion of Conformity

Illinois punk band The Didjits

Columbus Ohio band The New Bomb Turks

And L.A. punk band The Germs (who’s guitarist Pat Smear later ended up in Nirvana)
