A man from Monticello, Minnesota claimed to be Pink Floyd guitarist-vocalist David Gilmour in order to avoid paying $100,000 in medical expenses.

The St. Cloud Times reports 53-year old Phillip Michael Schaeffer was arrested in an investigation of felony theft to swindle.

When Schaeffer entered St. Cloud Hospital on April 20th, he claimed not to have health insurance and gave the name “David Gilmour.”

Staff became suspicious of the Schaeffer, who even signed an autograph for a hospital employee’s son, with many believing he was not the famed guitarist.

Hospital spokeswoman Jeanine Nistler tells the St. Cloud Times, “There was some discussion among security staff leading people to believe that he really wasn’t David Gilmour.” Adding, “So our security supervisor pulled up the security camera shots of when this man entered the hospital and compared them to pictures on the Internet of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and determined he was not David Gilmour.”

When the Gilmour impersonator returned to the hospital for more care on April 24, he told hospital staff that Pink Floyd was on tour in Canada and stopped through St. Cloud to get medical treatment. He also gave information showing he had health insurance from Lloyd’s of London.

A St. Cloud police officer, who was at the hospital for an unrelated manner, was alerted about the suspicious impersonator and confronted Schaeffer.

After admitting he indeed was not David Gilmour, he was taken to jail and later released while police gather information on possible charges to present to the county’s attorney’s office.
