(Being a bit of a “youngin,” embarrassingly, the first time I heard this song was in Wayne’s World, when Cassondra (Tia Carrere) and her band Crucial Taunt covered it.)

Nevertheless, this iconic glam-rock sing-along was actually covered by several real bands including a handful of punks like The Damned, The Buzzcocks, and Agent Orange. It was first released as a single in 1973 and found its way to the top of U.S. charts a couple years later when it appeared on the band’s album, Desolation Boulevard.

The story behind this high-energy, shuffling tune is that it’s a real-time reference to what it was like to be at a Sweet show in the mid 1970s. There was actually an instance where someone threw bottles at the band during a performance and ultimately forced them off the stage.
