E Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt May Miss Springsteen Concerts to Film TV Show

Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band may be missing a member on some of their upcoming tour dates. Guitarist and Springsteen sidekick Steven Van Zandt is facing possible scheduling conflicts in order to film the second season of his Norwegian television show, Lilyhammer.
Van Zandt told Rolling Stone, “I made commitments before the tour even existed,” adding that he is working with his bandmates to “bend things around” to accommodate his schedule.
“We’re still trying to figure it all out, and we won’t know for another couple of months,” he said. “Bruce and [manager] Jon Landau are very, very understanding about this and very supportive of my TV career.”
Lilyhammer’s star is Van Zandt, so options are limited for reducing the presence of his character, Frank Tagliano. When the rocker was on The Sopranos, writers were able to work around his tour schedule since he played a supporting role.
His work on The Sopranos prepped him to step into the lead role in Lilyhammer, which is also about mobsters — but instead of the classic New Jersey backdrop, the show goes international. The rocker plays a mobster who moves to Norway after joining the United States Witness Protection Program, drawn to the Scandinavian country after seeing the 1994 Winter Olympics.

“It’s been a huge, huge success in terms of a European production…it’s been amazing to see how big a deal this has become,” Van Zandt said.
The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter both called the show “odd,” with the latter conceding, “Sometimes you just have to go with a premise, people.”
The band’s current jaunt (including some Norwegian dates) is scheduled to continue through September, with the possibility of continuing into the fall. “All that stuff is up in the air right now,” Van Zandt added.
Lilyhammer is the first original series from Netflix, with season one currently available to stream through the service.
