Live Performance: “Man In Motion” Warren Haynes Is A One-Man Musical Time Capsule
[pullquote quote=”One of the great things about soul and blues music is, even with the most heart-wrenching songs you feel better after you hear them.” credit=”Warren Haynes”]The title of [lastfm]Warren Haynes[/lastfm]’ new solo album Man In Motion is perhaps the most apt description possible for the man himself.
The definition of a journeyman guitar player, Haynes has spent two decades with the [lastfm]Allman Brothers Band[/lastfm] and nearly as long with his own band [lastfm]Gov’t Mule[/lastfm], all the while becoming one of the most sought-after sit-in artists on the touring circuit. He’s equally impressive when performing solo, as on his seminal album Live at Bonnaroo.
Haynes brought that solo magic to Street Date‘s studios recently to perform songs off his incredible new album. Click through to watch riveting renditions of “River’s Gonna Rise,” “Sick of My Shadow” and “Your Wildest Dreams” plus our exclusive interview with the Man In Motion.

“Sick Of My Shadow”
[pullquote quote=”(Soul is) taking a personal statement about a hard time and turning it into positivity.” credit=””]As Haynes recounts in this interview, the songs on Man In Motion were written over the course of several years. Many were songs that leaned towards soul music, the style that most influenced him as a young musician and one that he comes back to time and again.
These songs didn’t fit in as [lastfm]Allman Brothers Band[/lastfm] or [lastfm]Gov’t Mule[/lastfm] songs so Haynes saved them, knowing he would eventually make this soul record. This man has “soul” coming out of every pore, even before he opens his mouth and lets loose his hearty, southern-tinged growl.
“River’s Gonna Rise”
“Your Wildest Dreams”
Man In Motion was recorded near Austin, Texas at a studio belonging to none other than American icon [lastfm]Willie Nelson[/lastfm].
Surrounded by vintage recording gear and positive vibes, Haynes assembled a dream team of musicians that included [lastfm]Ivan Neville[/lastfm] (of the New Orleans-based Neville family musical dynasty), bass legend [lastfm]George Porter, Jr[/lastfm], vocalist [lastfm]Ruthie Foster[/lastfm] and sax man [lastfm]Ron Holloway[/lastfm].
