Today’s Countdown To Summer Destination Is Upper Kittitas County

View Comments

Looking for a new place to go this summer that isn’t too far away? Head over the pass to spectacular Upper Kittitas County! Located on the eastern slopes of the cascades, this is the perfect area to explore the vast Washington wilderness. Enjoy the fresh mountain air as you raft or fish along the Cle Elum and Yakima River. Wander through the old mining town of Roslyn and take in the sights. Or play a round of golf at the Suncadia resort!

Explore the outdoors throughout this beautiful area! With the 2.2 million acre Wenatchee National Forest right next door, Upper Kittitas County gives you access to wild, forested country, streams, and high country lakes; the outdoor activities are endless.

Backpack through the wilderness and camp under the stars. Follow the old Milwaukee Road rail trail through Iron Horse State Park and try your hand at fly fishing. Head over to Lake Easton and go mountain biking, boating, or swimming. Or explore Little Kachess Lake and Cle Elum Lake. Take a quick trip up Salmon la Sac Road to the Cooper Lake trailhead, where you can explore the Alpine Lakes Region.

Want to really escape the hustle and bustle? Look no further than the small, historic town of Roslyn, home to about 900 people. As you wander the city, you may recognize some of the sights. That’s right; Roslyn was the home of 90’s TV series, Northern Exposure. Though in the show Roslyn represented the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska, you can still see many of the buildings and businesses featured in the series. Make sure to grab a beer (or five) at The Brick Tavern, opened in 1889, making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Washington. Or wander through Cle Elum, where you can pop into museums or follow the Coal Mines Trail and enjoy historic mining sites.

Looking to stay somewhere a little swankier than a tent? Head over to the Suncadia Resort, which includes a lodge, inn, condos, and vacation rentals. Enjoy one of their three championship golf courses and then head over to the spa to wind down. With over 6,400 acres, you can bike, horseback ride, hike, or fish and get back in time for a delicious meal at the resort. Get more information on this stunning region HERE
