On March 5, 2002, the first episode of The Osbournes aired on MTV. Reality TV was not yet everywhere, and the idea of following a family around and documenting their daily lives was relatively new. The show became a sensation, making the perpetually befuddled [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ozzy Osbourne [/lastfm]into a household name in households that had never heard of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Black Sabbath[/lastfm]. Also featured on the show were Ozzy’s wife Sharon, and their children Kelly and Jack. A third daughter, Aimee, refused to participate.
Viewers were fascinated at just how out-of-it Ozzy seemed. And to the surprise of nobody, he has since said that he was stoned during every single day of filming. He told a reporter in 2009, “When the filming ended, I’d go in my little bunker and smoke a pipe and drink about a case of beer every day.” He says he can’t watch the show now because of it.
The show ran for 52 episodes on MTV over four seasons, with all of the profanity bleeped — although it aired in other countries, including Canada, with the profanity intact. The final episode aired in March 2005.
In a weird coda, the family returned in 2009 for The Osbournes: Reloaded, a variety show that aired in the States on FOX. It was canceled after one episode.
