May 2nd, 1979 was the first time former Small Faces and Faces drummer Kenny Jones played his first show as Keith Moon’s replacement in [lastfm]The Who[/lastfm]. It was a natural fit, The who and the Small Faces had been great mates back in the Mod days, and Kenny and Keith were good friends, in fact they spent most of Keith’s last day on earth together. But Roger Daltry who became increasingly agitated through the “Face Dances” and “It’s Hard” albums and tours from ’79 through ’82 (including that Kingdome stop with The Clash) by the 800 pound gorilla in the room: Kenny Jones is a fine drummer, but he ain’t no Keith Moon. By the time an ’89 reunion tour, Roger told Pete: “He goes, or I do!”
